An hour's drive from Melbourne are the goldfields where thousands flocked in the 1850's from all over the world. You can trace the rich heritage of two dozen townships in the region bounded by Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine, Stawell, St Arnaud and Ararat. Ballarat's Sovereign Hill is a living museum which recreates the rich history of the goldfields while Bendigo's magnificent Golden Dragon Museum traces the region's links with the Chinese dating from 1854.
